Sonic Infinity Engine 5.0

What is all this? :

Sonic Infinity Engine 5.0 is a fan made, modern game inspired, Sonic The Hedgehog framework originally made in Unreal Engine 4 and then ported to Unreal Engine 5. The goal of this project is to block out the first 45 seconds of a level while utilizing more traditional Sonic The Hedgehog level design values. The core pillar of this level being "multiple paths". Making sure the player could complete the level utilizing several different paths, each with their own unique feel, time advantages, and obstacles.
The level is not complete as this is an ongoing project I've given myself to continue to challenge my level design knowledge.

The Unreal Engine 4 version of this framework was created by a user named Ōban and the user RobowilOFFICIAL ported it to Unreal Engine 5. I have no affiliation with either of these individuals and did not participate in the creation of either versions of the frameworks. My only involvement is utilizing their open source frameworks to prototype a level for personal enjoyment.

The top most path in any Sonic game is usually the most difficult to complete. But with it's difficulty comes the reward of the fastest competition time. The highest most route of the level allows the player to save a generous amount of time while also referencing an iconic Sonic Adventure 2 level trope (the hexagonal vertically moving platforms).

A consistent design choice I made in this blockout was to hide alternative route entrances just outside of the players path. This was done to reward those with fast enough reaction with a more interesting and difficult micro-routes / shortcuts that will then converge back into the main routes. If I continue working on this level these micro-routes could be used to hold special collectibles or other goodies.

The bottom most path is the easiest and most frequently traveled. These paths usually take the longest time to complete of all the paths. It is also currently the most underdeveloped of the 3 paths. (At the end of the video) The intent is to have the player dive down into a pipe overflowing with water. Players would then have to platform their way out the other end while managing the oxygen supply.
